With this project we want to improve frost control in fruit growing while taking into account cost efficiency, optimal use of energy, environmental impact and applicability in practice.

The project addressed the fruit grower as well as manufacturers, distributors and installers of existing and potentially new frost control techniques.

New frost control techniques investigated
A large number of alternative techniques were analyzed theoretically. A number of these were tested in practice for feasibility and possibilities. For example, advanced canopy techniques, the use of foam, radiant heating, various detection and warning systems, and electric heating ribbons whether or not combined with other techniques. We then conducted tests with the techniques on fields with frost.

Leveraging existing techniques
Besides these new techniques, we also looked at existing techniques and how we can use them optimally. For example, we can combine techniques to achieve better results, such as closing cherry caps in combination with sprinklers or hot air canons.

Sensor system developed
For the field tests in the field with frost, we developed a sensor system in which measurements can be made right into the flower bud. This measurement technique can also be used in further research in the future. The analyses also clearly showed the importance of local temperature monitoring (whether or not linked to a local sensor system). There we definitely see an opportunity for monitoring system providers.

Economic calculation tool
Finally, we also developed an economic calculation tool. With this you can make an analysis of different potential frost control systems at field level. You can also measure the impact of different scenarios. In this way suppliers can better frame their product and show new customers the potential of frost management techniques.

New knowledge gathered
Together with the support group, we built up a lot of knowledge about frost control techniques and frost in fruit growing. All information gathered during this project has been compiled and can be found here.
